Nuit Blanche / Noche Blanca

Martha and I had the incredible opportunity to exhibit Lotería: Luck Talks (La suerte que habla) at the Nuit Blanche festival in Montreal, hosted at the beautiful Espacio México on March 1, 2025.
The night was an absolute blast and a tremendous success!

A huge thanks to Remigio Valdés Hoyos and the incredible team at the Mexican Consulate General, and to all our friends who came out to support, cheer, and play ¡Lotería!

This venue in Montreal was particularly special, as we had the riddles/Coplas translated into French. Thank you, Alejandra Bernal! It was amazing to watch everyone engaged, playing our Lotería: Luck Talks game in three different languages!

A major addition to our exhibition was the creation of enramadas de Papel Picado (cut-paper banners) crafted specifically for La Lotería Opina by the fabulous maestro René Mendoza. These banners featured six unique designs adapted from our Lotería cards: El Secuestrado, La Feminista, La Catrina, La Piñata, El Pañuelo, and El Corazón.

René Mendoza is one of the very few artisans in the town of San Salvador Huixcolotla, in the state of Puebla, who still manually cuts and creates unique designs in papel picado. Though the town is known for the manufacture of papel picado, most production today is machine-cut — making René’s handmade work even more extraordinary. Visiting his home and workspace and meeting his family in person was an unforgettable experience.

Behind the scenes at Nuit Blanche

Months of planning, weeks of preparation… and just a few hours to bring it all to life for the big night. Thank you, Paras Vijan, for your non-stop help on install day — you kept us going! And a HUGE shoutout to the amazing Flavia Hevia — you saved us BIG time with the papel picado install. Then you came back on Nuit Blanche to help, cheer, and celebrate with us.
